Your next startup investment might be in the US. Or England. Or China. Good ideas come from everywhere, and everywhere includes more than just the US Dollar.
Signed is now multi-currency. There are 30 currencies to pick from, and every investment can be in a different one.
Every check keeps its own currency
This is the main idea behind how we built it: a €50,000 check is a €50,000 check. It doesn’t quietly become $54,000 in our database and then drift around every time the exchange rate moves. We store it in euros, because you invested in euros.
We also convert it into your home currency, which is what your whole portfolio adds up in. We do that once, at the exchange rate on the day the money left your account, and then we keep that number. Your cost basis is what the investment actually cost you. It doesn’t change when the euro has a good week.
What does move is what the investment is worth today. Current value converts at today’s rate, which means your returns in your home currency include whatever the exchange rate did along the way. That’s the honest answer, even if it isn’t always the fun one.
Currency Magic™: now with currencies
Currency Magic™ already expanded 2.5m into $2,500,000 and did quick math like 50k * 3. Now it also understands currencies. Type €50k, 50k chf, CHF 1.5M or £2.5k + 500, and the field picks the currency and expands the amount. Hover the Currency Magic™ label for a quick reminder:
Settings has a new Currency page. Choose your home currency there, and how you like your numbers written. Number format matters as much as currency, especially when you’re typing into a money field and 25.000 could mean twenty-five or twenty-five thousand. Whichever format you pick, Signed reads what you type in that same format.
If you change your home currency, we convert every check again at the rate from the day it went in. We don’t use today’s rate for that.
Currency, currency, everywhere, and not a drop to drink
Typing amounts into forms is the easy part. Plenty of money gets into Signed without you typing it:
- Imports. AngelList and CSV imports read the currency from each row, whether it’s a symbol, a code, or a currency column. They don’t assume dollars.
-
Forwarded email. When you forward an investor update or a pitch to [email protected], we read
€5M ARRas five million euros, not five million dollars. - Pitch decks. Round terms and financials pulled from a deck are read in the deck’s own currency.
- MCP. Your AI assistant can log a check in any supported currency, and it knows your home currency.
- Exports. Your CSV export now includes each row’s currency, its home-currency amount and the exchange rate used.
Now go write that check in krónur.
